Worth knowing up front: the Lake House building and its patio are reserved for SweetGrass homeowners and are not open to rental guests. You have the run of the grounds, the lake and the trails — just not the lodge interior.
Inside the gate there's Treetop Park and Chimney Park, plus hiking and biking trails through meadow and mature forest. What makes SweetGrass unusual is what's next door: Moses Cone Memorial Park's 25 miles of carriage trails and Julian Price Park are right off the Parkway, putting more than 40 miles of connected trail within a few minutes' drive — including routes toward the summit of Grandfather Mountain.
Where is SweetGrass? SweetGrass is off US-221 South just north of the Linn Cove Viaduct, at the foot of Grandfather Mountain and about ten minutes from downtown Blowing Rock. The community sits on a plateau around 3,500 feet.
What can vacation rental guests use at SweetGrass? Guests have the grounds around the Lake House, the lakeshore, all of the community hiking trails, and fishing on the lake. The Lake House building itself and its patio are reserved for homeowners and are not open to rental guests. Is SweetGrass gated? Yes. We send the gate code with your check-in details before arrival.
Can you fish at SweetGrass? Yes. The 22-acre lake is stocked with rainbow trout, and Boone Fork Creek runs through the community as a designated North Carolina Outstanding Resource Water. Bring a rod and a current NC fishing license.
Is it good for a big group? It's one of the better spots in the area for one. Our home here sleeps 16, and the lake, the lakeshore grounds and the trail system give a large group somewhere to spread out beyond the house itself.
When is the best time to visit? October for fall color — the Parkway right outside the gate is the reason people plan a year ahead. Summer for the lake and the cool 3,500-foot air, winter for quiet and easy access to three ski areas. May, June and September are the shoulder-season value windows.
