Hidden Gem is a charming rustic cottage nestled in the woods right beside Lees-McRae College and just a short walk to downtown Banner Elk. This peaceful retreat perfectly blends cozy mountain charm with modern comfort.
Inside, the home features three spacious bedrooms all located on the main floor—a great setup for guests who prefer to avoid stairs. There’s also a loft area with two low twin beds that’s perfect for kids but may not be ideal for adults. The inviting great room centers around a classic wood-burning indoor fireplace, creating the perfect spot to unwind after a day exploring the High Country.
Step outside to a large single-level deck with comfortable seating, a wood-burning outdoor fireplace (a guest favorite!), and a bubbling hot tub. The hog-wired fenced yard is perfect for pets—dogs are welcome!
From the back deck, you can enjoy soothing sounds of the nearby falls—possibly Mill Pond Falls—adding to the peaceful mountain atmosphere. While you don’t have a direct view of Grandfather Mountain, the property still offers lovely mountain views surrounded by serene woods.
And despite its proximity to Lees-McRae College, the area is incredibly calm. The campus is quiet, and weekend noise is rare—if you see ten students at once, it’s a crowd!
Whether you’re sipping coffee by the fireplace, stargazing by the outdoor hearth, or strolling into town for dinner, Hidden Gem offers a cozy and convenient escape right in the heart of Banner Elk.
AWD or 4WD is highly recommended during the winter months if weather conditions are adverse.

The Hidden Gem was just that - a really cool house that's makes for a perfect mountain getaway. Lots of great spaces with so many cool touches that scream "mountain cozy". The deck w/ hot tub and well-maintained yard was much appreciated, and the bedrooms all had very comfortable beds. The location was perfect, right up against the campus of Lees-McRae college and only a short walk to main street. Enjoyed the smores in the backyard firepit (courtesy of Nick!) and lots of strolls around the immediate surroundings. I highly recommend this wonderful house with tons of character.
Hidden Gem was spot on for our needs. Great fenced in yard for our fur baby. The back deck was the best for relaxing and soaking in your surroundings. Nick was awesome with providing recommendations for fishing, as well as a great backup plan for an amenity that was not available. We would definitely stay here again!!
We had an amazing stay at Hidden Gem. It is the perfect location for the college and walking into town! We did see a bear and had a wood chuck in the front porch so wildlife is not far! The cabin is perfect for our family of 4. The outdoor fireplace was our #1 spot to relax in the evenings. Definitely recommend!
Had such a great time at Hidden Gem! Nick was a super responsive and helpful host. Will definitely come back to this rental. Was in the middle of town but felt like it was secluded in the woods - perfect combo.
We loved our week in the mountains. The fenced-in yard was amazing for our dog. We enjoyed relaxing by the fire on the deck and toasting marshmallow. The cabin was close to several great hiking trails - it was perfect for our family getaway to the mountains.
The Hidden Gem was one of the best places I have stayed. The amenities in this house are numerous. Nick is a great host and the home is an amazing. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. We had a one-off issue and Nick immediately found a solution. Nick and this house made our trip to Banner Elk better than we could have planned for it to go.
